Energy Activity Holding at High Levels in Texas - Dallas Fed

Federal Reserve Districts
Federal Reserve Districts

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas reports energy activity has seen little change from "high levels" over the past reporting period in its most recent Beige Book.

It's no surprise. More than 800 of the ~1,700 rigs active in the U.S. are working in Texas. Over 250 of those rigs are active in the Eagle Ford.

The report goes further in saying activity is higher than last year, but it does note one not so promising metric. Margins for oil & gas service firms have tightened over the past few months. Tighter margins are the direct result of operators moving into development mode where there is an increased focus on costs.

Takeaways from the energy report include:

  • Global energy demand is steady
  • Oil & gas operators expect "modest" improvement in economy through 2014
  • Petrochemical production was down slightly due to unplanned outages and softening global demand

Other economy-wide notes include:

  • Reports of labor shortages have eased from earlier in the year
  • Housing market remains strong
  • Office & industrial leasing activity strengthened
  • Severity of the drought's influence on agriculture in Texas lessened with recent rainfall

The Dallas Beige Book summarizes recent economic conditions in the Eleventh District.

Goodrich Increases 2014 Budget by 50% & Is Shifting to the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale

Goodrich Petroleum Eagle Ford and Pearsall Activity Map
Goodrich Petroleum Eagle Ford and Pearsall Activity Map

Goodrich Petroleum will spend 44% or $100 million of the company's $255 million budget in 2013 in the Eagle Ford. That will change in 2014 when the company will spend just $30 million in the play.

The company plans to spend almost 50% more on development in 2014, but almost 75% or $300 million of the company's $375 million budget will be spent in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS).

The Eagle Ford has helped drive an increase in oil production, but Goodrich only controls 45,000 gross (32,000 net) acres in the play. In the TMS, Goodrich controls more than 300,000 net acres across Louisiana and Mississippi. The shear size of the company's position makes the potential much greater.

Atlas Pipeline Partners Eagle Ford System

Atlas Pipeline acquired Teak Midstream earlier in the year and now expects to reach full utilization at its two processing plants (400 mmcfd) by year-end 2014.

The company's Silver Oak I plant is online with capacity of 200 mmcfd and the Silver Oak II plant (200 mmcfd) will be online in the first quarter of 2014.

Atlas is currently processing 155 mmcfd and expects full utilization of its first plant by year-end and full utilization of both plants by year-end 2014.

The 155 mmcfd being processed represents growth of 20% from the second quarter average of 122 mmcfd.

The company also has plans for a third Silver Oak plant with capacity of 200 mmcfd. The plant is still pending board approval, but it could increase the company's processing capacity to 600 mmcfd sometime in the second half of 2015.

Eagle Ford Well Spuds Q3 2013

Baker Hughes released its third quarter estimates for well spuds and the Eagle Ford eclipsed 1,100 wells in a single quarter for the first time. The play accounted for 1,133 or more than 10% of the 9,175 wells spud in the U.S. during the quarter.

Baker Hughes tracks the 14 core counties when evaluating the play, so actual numbers are higher. The oilfield service company tallied 233 rigs the 14 county area during the quarter compared to ~270 in the 30 county area we observed.

Did you know drilling starts on over 1,000 Eagle Ford wells per quarter?

The number of well spuds was up 4% from 1,089 in the second quarter to 1,133 in the third quarter. The average rig in the Eagle Ford drilled 4.86 wells during the third quarter or averaged a little less than 19 days drilling and moving from well to well.

The Eagle Ford and the Permian together accounted for more than one-third of all well spuds in the quarter.

Top Oil & Gas Producing Counties in Texas

The Eagle Ford Shale rig countdecreased by 11 rigs from 267 to 256 running last week. No single county had a decline of more than 2 rigs, so the decrease was not the result of a major shift geographically.

Counties in the region account for 5 of the top 10 oil producing counties in the state. Read more in the article Eagle Ford Dominates the Top Producing Counties List
